Kyo-Train Garaku is the most beautiful way to travel from Osaka to Kyoto

Kyo-Train Garaku

Ride from Osaka-Umeda to Kyoto-Kawaramachi on Kyo-Train Garaku, Hankyu Railway’s Kyoto-themed sightseeing train with seasonal carriage designs, no reservation required and no extra fare.

Written by Japan Index | Wednesday 3 June 2026

Kyo-Train Garaku is one of the easiest and most affordable special trains to add to a Kansai itinerary. Running on the Hankyu Kyoto Line between Osaka-Umeda and Kyoto-Kawaramachi, this sightseeing train brings a Kyoto atmosphere on board before you even arrive in the city. Hankyu describes it as a designer train with Japanese flair, with each carriage decorated in a different seasonal Kyoto motif.

The best part is that Kyo-Train Garaku does not require a special ticket or reservation. Passengers can board with the standard Hankyu fare only, making it a rare themed train experience that feels special without being expensive or complicated.

The main reason to ride Kyo-Train Garaku is the interior. Each of the six carriages has its own seasonal design, inspired by Kyoto plants, gardens and traditional aesthetics. Instead of a normal commuter train layout, some cars include tatami-style box seating, window-facing seats, shoji-inspired design details and even garden-style decorative elements.

Car 1 is themed around autumn maple leaves, Car 2 around winter bamboo, Car 3 around spring cherry blossoms, Car 4 around summer hollyhock, Car 5 around early autumn silver grass, and Car 6 around early spring plum blossoms. The result is a train that feels more like a moving Kyoto lounge than a normal ride between Osaka and Kyoto.
