There’s a hidden hole in Japan where a bear will give you coffee.
This is Anakuma Cafe Harajuku, one of the strangest little café experiences I’ve found in Tokyo. Instead of walking into a normal café, you walk up to a small green hole in a concrete wall, choose your drink, pay, and then suddenly a bear paw appears.
That is the whole magic of Anakuma Cafe Harajuku. It is not just about coffee. It is about the tiny interaction, the surprise, the voice behind the wall, the bear paw reaching out, and the feeling that you’ve stumbled into one of those weird Tokyo places that could only really exist here.
When I visited, the bear told me their name was Dear, asked where I was from, and even gave us tokens to spin the prize machine. We ended up winning bear paw stickers, got challenged to stop a timer at 888, failed miserably, and finally had our coffees passed through the bear hole.
Before leaving, we even pinky swore with the bear that we’d come back.
Anakuma Cafe Harajuku café guide
The main reason to visit Anakuma Cafe Harajuku is the experience. Tokyo has thousands of cafés, but not many where you order through a hole in the wall and get served by a bear paw.
The café is built around a fictional world where the bears come from Anakuma Forest, a place somewhere in Japan. According to the café’s story, the bears opened Anakuma Cafe to help humans and bears understand each other and to support the idea of restoring rich forests.
That story gives the café more personality than a normal novelty spot. The staff are not just “bear paws.” They are characters, each with their own name, personality and backstory. Our bear was Dear, a female bear whose official profile says she loves travelling, sketching and learning about the human world.

Anakuma Cafe Harajuku bear-paw experience
At Anakuma Cafe Harajuku, you do not sit down at a regular counter and order like a normal café. The fun starts from the outside.
You approach the green bear hole, choose your drink, and interact with the bear behind the wall. A bear paw comes out to take part in the service, hand over items, play around and eventually pass your drink through the hole.
Depending on the bear, the interaction can feel funny, cute, awkward, chaotic or weirdly wholesome. That is what makes it worth visiting. The drink is part of the visit, but the real reason to go is the tiny performance around the order.
It is especially good for couples, friends, families, first-time Tokyo visitors or anyone looking for a short, memorable stop around Harajuku.
